Great post from my wife, Jaime Waits. Some highlights from a talk we gave together the other day to a group of couples. Leadership can be a struggle and strain on your relationship. The most authentic leaders have done courageous work through their own process. Here are some words of encouragement from Jaime to apply when things get tough;
Choosing your marriage in the midst of struggle can be so hard, but here are some points that helped get me through some dark days:
– surround yourself with people who will hold hope for you
– friends who will not put your husband down, but will lift your marriage in prayer
-ask for help from your church family, support groups, counseling
try not to live in the past
– it is easy to day dream about how it used to be and how it is not right now. Hold on to those memories but don’t get stuck in them.
create new memories
– being in a crisis and difficult times is exhausting so take a break. Plan something that is not part of your daily routine and keep it simple. The park, a movie,pick nick etc.
-learn to play and have fun again, get outside you box and routine
choose to grow
-choose God everyday in practical ways to give yourself hope.
-start everyday with a verse,devotion, encouraging words from a friend. Something to come back to when your heart and mind feel overwhelmed.
If you are in a dark time of struggle please know you are not alone although it may feel that way. Satan is on a mission to destroy your marriage and family. Reaching out for help can be hard, but God created us for community and to walk through life with one another. Now I really don’t like videos, (and I’m not the best at them…) but it is something Travis has been encouraging as I blog, because it communicates at a more authentic level than just the written word, so enjoy 🙂
