Integrity is a buzz word that is especially misunderstood in leadership. When we say we “question someone’s integrity” what we are really saying is that we think that they are a hypocrite, or we disagree with their values or choices.
Integrity is about taking responsibility, owning your choices, regardless of the consequences. If I said one thing and did another, that would be hypocritical. However, when I own my mistake, correct it, apologize for it, learn from it…that is what integrity is all about.
If authentic leaders did not have integrity they would never learn from their missteps or failings. Integrity says that you get up, own the consequence, and move forward. If you don’t have integrity, you just lie there and complain, or shift blame to others. Integrity is an action-oriented character trait. It must be evidenced and seen through consistent choices, which match your words, displayed over time.
